ANIMATION BOOK LIST!
EVERY ANIMATOR SHOULD HAVE A COPY OF THE FOLLOWING BOOKS.
THE ANIMATORS SURVIVAL KIT.
By Richard Williams.
Faber and Faber (ISBN 0-571-20228-4).
Probably the best book on animation there is (based on his excellent lectures).
CARTOON ANIMATION.
FILM CARTOONS.
By Preston Blair.
Walter Foster Art books (ISBN 0-929261-51-8 and ISBN1-56010-069-9).
The two "workshop manuals" of animation. Keep both by your desk at all times. If an animator tells you they've never used a "Preston Blair", they're either lying, a natural or have wasted several years working things out.
THE HUMAN FIGURE IN MOTION.
ANIMALS IN MOTION.
Eadweard Muybridge.
Dover Books (ISBN 0-486-24745-7 and ISBN 0-486-24911-5).
Muybridges' photographic studies of motion are as revelatory today as they were 120 years ago. Keep the two abridged soft back versions by your desk
TIMING FOR ANIMATION.
Harold Whitaker and John Halas.
Focal Press Limited (ISBN 0-240-51714-8).
Very good on the mechanics of animation.
THE ANIMATORS WORK BOOK.
By Tony White.
Phaidon Press Limited (ISBN 0-7148-2439-9).
A excellent basic book on animation (Tony is currently working on a more up to date follow up - I cant wait).
ACTING FOR ANIMATORS.
By Ed Hooks.
Heinemann (ISBN 0-325-00229-0).
An area much neglected by animators until the advent of this wonderful book.
